Corporate Social Responsibility

“We don’t believe in deriving gains from our social work”. KCPL is involved in design, development and manufacture of world-class construction equipment for the infrastructure sector. We had invited noted environmentalist Shri Sudarlal Bahuguna, leader of the Chipko Andolan, for one of our event at our factory in Vadodara. During the get-together, he mentioned that in general, industries are spreading pollution in the environment and we all are making our future generations to pay a heavy price for the same. His words inspired us a lot, and we decided to get into creating awareness and activities to reduce pollution in the environment. This was long before the central government made it mandatory for companies to spend 2 per cent of the profit as a part of their corporate social responsibilities for social causes.

Tree Garden Award

Tree Garden Award is a unique inter-school competition organized in collaboration with Community Science Center and RCBC. The aim is to inculcate the habit of plantation among students and encourage them to take care of the environment. Participating schools need to develop a small garden in which five different tree species (saplings) would be planted and nurtured by ten students (from Class VII to XII grade) under the guidance of a teacher. The jury then visit the schools, inspects the gardens, ranks them and the top maintained gardens are awarded. Drawing competition, poster-making competition, slogan writing and essay writing competitions and bio-diversity quiz are conducted for the year round student engagement.

Sat Visarjan

In India, the Ganapati festival is celebrated every year with lot of fanfare. People install Ganesh idols at home and worship it with family and friends. At the end of the ten-day festival, the idols are immersed in water bodies like lakes, rivers, sea, etc. However, this ritual causes a lot of water pollution and affects the marine life. In order to mitigate these effects, KCPL organises the ‘Sat-Visarjan’ each year without hurting the religious sentiments of the people. We install large truck mounted water tanks near the water bodies, in which the idols can be immersed. A large number of people appreciate this opportunity to be able to immerse the idol in clean water. At the end of the day, the water is recycled and used for irrigation. This helps in less pollution of local water bodies.

Promoting Local Arts and Artists

KYB takes pride in reviving and promoting local art forms like rangoli, which is unique to Vadodara. This is a rare art form in which artists spread coloured powder by hand to crate unbelievably realistic sceneries and portraits. This art form was on the verge of extinction since it is laborious, time consuming and not possible to preserve. Due to this fact the art cannot be commercially exploited and hence the artist was losing interest. KYB Conmat has taken up revival of this art form by supporting artists, organising exhibitions, creating interest among the masses. The company’s efforts have fetched good results over the years and this art is getting popular like never before.

The Art Society

Vadodara is called Sanskari Nagari and art is an integral part of city culture. KYB has formed an art society ‘HUB’ to promote various art forms and budding artists through various exhibitions, art camps and provide scholarships to the poor upcoming artists.

Empowering Youth

Youth is the lifeline of our country. If empowered, they have the potential to excel. KYB supports youth and tried its best to contribute to strengthen them. It supports events like ‘Footprints’ & ‘Paramarsh’, organised by MS University students to help them in preparing for the industry, and develop leadership and management skills.

Skill Development

Through its vocational training programs, KYB tries to create a skilled workforce and provide better employment opportunities to the youth. Every year, it provides professional training to fresh pass outs from technical institutes and trains them hands-on, so that the students can be easily employed in infrastructure industry. Every year, 250 students take advantage of this training; the target is to reach the number to 1000 students by end of 2018. KCPL focus is also on the all-round development of the community. Educating villagers around our plants located mostly in the distant rural areas and tribal belt, to care for environment, in collaboration with various organizations.

We support events like ‘Prena’ an event organised by MS University students to encourage and motivate specially-abled students.

The company has received many national and international awards for the outstanding contribution to the industry. Awards in the field of CSR include ‘Corporate Social Responsibility Award’ from Federation of Gujarat Industries in 2012. The award was given away by the than Chief Minister of Gujarat and current Honourable Prime Minister. The company also received the ‘Environmental Excellence Award’ in 2013.

Contribution-CSR-Awards

Winston Churchill has been quoted as saying many times “Responsibility is the price of greatness”. I can’t think of a more judicious use of words when it comes to the value of CSR and sustainability. There are 3 essential things we consider while formulation CSR Strategy. First, we assess the sustainability of a project before planning an investment. Otherwise, the project is likely to end, as soon the investment is withdrawn. Another very important issue we consider is a thorough assessment to understand the core challenge the communities are facing, rather than just investing in infrastructure. For example, you don’t want to invest funds in providing computers for digital education in schools, if those schools only have access to a few hours of electricity. Finally, we team up and work together to deliver impact on large scale. It helps in developing a sense of belonging and responsibility.
